The cheetah is the fastest animal on earth. They can reach a top speed of 120km/h. They accelerate faster that a formula one grand prix car, going from 0 – 70km/h in just 2 seconds.
The Cheetah runs within the WCCC
Every day, if the weather permits it, we exercise our cheetahs. If the weather is not perfect we cannot run the cheetahs. For instance if it is too cold or wet, windy or even to hot. Cheetahs are extremely fragile animals. In order to oxidise there blood while they run, they have abnormally large lungs, so if it is too wet when they run, they can get pneumonia. And if it is two cold and there body temperature spikes too much and then comes down to quickly, they would surely die. The exercise is extremely important for three reasons. First, to make sure they stay fit and healthy and strong. Physically and mentally. Secondly in order to activate there hunting skills. And then thirdly and most importantly, to make sure that the females can ovulate.
Every time a cheetah runs, there body temperature spikes up to 40.5 ®C and this is extremely important to help the females ovulate. But unfortunately every time when the males run, they burn their own sperm. Sperm cannot survive over 38.6®C so that is why we only allow the females to run every day. The males run approximately one a week.
The weather has to be perfect; otherwise we will not do an exercise program with them. We purely do the cheetah run for the wellbeing of the cheetahs. Even when there is no guest we would still do it, because it is necessary and also allot of fun, for us and for the cheetahs.
